How to Properly Care for Vinyl Records – Keep Your Collection in Top Shape
Why Care Matters
A well-maintained record doesn't just sound better – it retains its value. Whether you're a collector or simply enjoy listening to vinyl: proper care extends the lifespan of your records by decades.
Proper Storage
Store vertically – Records should always stand upright, never stacked or leaning at an angle. The weight can cause warping.
Mind the temperature – Ideal conditions are 18–22°C at 40–60% humidity. Avoid direct sunlight and proximity to heaters!
Replace inner sleeves – Original paper sleeves can cause scratches. Invest in anti-static polyethylene inner sleeves.
How to Clean Records
Dry Cleaning
Before each play, wipe the record with a carbon fiber brush. The brush removes dust and reduces static charge.
Wet Cleaning
For thorough cleaning, we recommend:
- Use specialized record cleaning fluid (never dish soap!)
- Wipe with a microfiber cloth in circular motions along the grooves
- Let the record dry completely before playing or storing
Professional Cleaning
For particularly valuable records, a record cleaning machine is worth the investment. These clean with distilled water and vacuum drying.
Don't Forget the Stylus
The condition of your stylus is just as important as the condition of the record:
- Replace every 500–1000 playing hours
- Clean regularly with a soft brush
- Set the tracking force of the cartridge correctly
