What Are Old Music Cassettes Worth Today? – The 2026 MC Price Guide
Tapes Are Back – And They Have Value
Cassettes were laughed at for a long time. Now they're collector items, underground format and personal passion all in one. Indie labels press to tape again, punk and hardcore bands release limited MCs, and old cassettes from the attic suddenly carry two-digit price tags.
But not every cassette is worth gold. Here's the honest overview.
The Rough Price Range
| Category | Price per MC | |---|---| | Standard pop/easy listening/samplers | from €1 | | Mainstream rock & classical | €1–3 | | Indie / new wave / sought-after 80s pop | €3–8 | | Hip-hop mixtapes (90s originals) | €8–25 | | Punk / hardcore / DIY tapes | €10–40 | | Metal demos & first editions | €15–50 | | Children's audio dramas | €2–15 | | Sealed originals / limited releases | into triple digits |
These are real buy-in prices – not Discogs fantasy numbers.
What Actually Drives Value
Genre. Punk, hardcore, hip-hop, indie and metal are the top drivers. Easy listening and pop samplers stay mass-market.
Pressing size. Limited editions, tour tapes, label demos – all gold. Million-selling albums on MC, not so much.
Condition. Shell, inlay and especially the tape itself must be okay. We unfortunately cannot buy moldy tapes – they damage stock and playback equipment.
Sealed. Unopened original packaging doubles to quadruples the price.
Inlay & J-card. Without cover/inlay the value drops 30–60%.

Bottom Line
First, see what you have. Roughly sort by genre. Standard tapes are cents – but somewhere in your old MCs there might be a punk tape that funds a solid night out.
